The Central and Western District is filled with streets of unique characters, and Centre Street in Sai Ying Pun is one of the steepest streets in Hong Kong!
In 2021, the Urban Renewal Fund selected Centre Street as a pilot project for old district revitalisation, using architectural design elements to integrate with the community. With the joint efforts of artists, local residents, and schools, the revitalisation project was completed in June this year!
The Festival of Centre Street cultural event is currently being held on Centre Street for a month (16 June - 15 July), inviting citizens to participate! Yesterday (16 June) a simple yet solemn opening ceremony was held, officiated by Ma Kam-wah, Chairman of the Urban Renewal Fund Board, and Jenny Cheng, the District Officer of Central and Western District, among others.
The highlights of The Festival of Centre Street cultural event include:
Exhibition: Daily from 12 noon to 8 pm, showcasing creative works by local residents and students, including hand-painted rice bowls, night light designs, and life stories of wet market owners.
Community Tours: Starting from 21 June, for three consecutive weekends, the tours will take participants to visit the project outcomes in the district, providing a brief introduction to the project background and design concepts, starting from the 'Bamboo Scaffolding'.
Movie Nights: On 28 June and 12 July at 6 pm, two movies will be screened respectively, 'The Way We Dance' and 'Happiness'.
Let's visit Centre Street together and explore this revitalised community blending old and new, feeling the unique neighbourhood charm!
